Visual and Performing Arts EDUCATION IN CALIFORNIA

Visual and Performing Arts EDUCATION IN CALIFORNIA

The California Department of Education (CDE) establishes standards for Visual and Performing Arts (VPA) to guide student outcomes in five disciplines: Dance, Media Arts, Music, Theatre, and Visual Arts. The CDE content standards are designed to encourage the highest achievement of every student, by defining the knowledge, concepts, and skills that students should acquire at each grade level or content area.

OVERVIEW OF Visual & Performing Arts EDUCATION IN SDUHSD

OVERVIEW OF Visual & Performing Arts EDUCATION IN SDUHSD

SDUHSD offers a wide range of VPA courses to students in grades 7-12. Students may take as many VPA classes as their schedule will allow, and prerequisites and department recommendations should be followed. Please see school websites for current course offerings and more information.

Middle School
All students in grades 7 & 8 may begin studies in select VPA classes. Middle school courses build skills and interest and may be used to satisfy prerequisites for high school courses. No high school credit will be granted for courses taken during middle school.

High School
One year of a VPA is a requirement to earn a high school diploma from SDUHSD. Additional VPA courses count toward fulfilling the elective credits requirement. To apply to most four-year colleges, students must earn a C grade or higher in a minimum of one year of the same VPA in high school. All students in grades 9-12 may take VPA courses offered by their school and should work directly with the school counselor.
