SDUHSD Concurrent Off-Campus Course Practices
Students have opportunities to take a broad range of courses in the district course of study including remediation, and have options to fulfill all district, state, and college admission requirements on campus. SDUHSD staff cannot recommend any off-campus or out-of-district institution or course and cannot proctor outside exams.
Students may take any courses off-campus that are not required for graduation without adding them to the SDUHSD transcript. The student would then provide the outside transcript directly to any college at time of application. All colleges follow their own admission practices for application of coursework and grades.
To support all families to make informed decisions, if interested in taking a course off-campus first please review this full page carefully.

Per Board Policies 6146.1, 6146.11, and 6146.3, the district shall grant credit toward high school graduation for coursework successfully completed at a community college, state college, public or private institution provided that all of the conditions are met.
- Students who wish to pursue concurrent off-campus coursework to be posted to a SDUHSD transcript must be enrolled at a district high school while attending the concurrent off-campus class.
- No student may begin to acquire high school credits until after the completion of the 8th grade. Middle school students may not place off-campus classes on their SDUHSD transcript.
- No more than 30 credits from concurrent off-campus college courses, private instruction, or public school courses may be transferred onto the high school transcript.
- The content area/subject must be included in the SDUHSD Course of Study.
Accreditation and Outside Institutions
- To assure that any transferring school or college will also accept the coursework, the institution that issues the official transcript must currently be fully accredited by one of the regional accrediting agencies as a school offering courses leading to a high school diploma to be accepted by SDUHSD.
-
- In California, the accrediting agency is the Western Association of Schools & Colleges.
- Important note: Providers who are only accredited by WASC as Supplementary Education Programs (SEP) will not be accepted for credit. If the school shows SEP Accredited
, the school is not fully accredited and coursework will not be accepted by CSU/UC and most other colleges or programs. Note: Only for Off-Campus World Language from not fully accredited institutions, see Off-Campus World Language for more information.
- Important note: Providers who are only accredited by WASC as Supplementary Education Programs (SEP) will not be accepted for credit. If the school shows SEP Accredited
- In California, the accrediting agency is the Western Association of Schools & Colleges.
-
- Outside of California, there are accepted regional accrediting agencies.
- For a course to be included in the CSU/UC GPA, it must appear on the outside school's own University of California approved list, as aligned with UC/CSU practices.
- A College Board CEEB code may be listed on the off-campus form. Advanced Placement courses must appear on the outside school's AP Ledger with College Board Authorization to be posted to SDUHSD transcript.
- SDUHSD will not adopt any other provider or institutions courses as its own.
- An “Off-Campus Course Permission Request Form” with the accreditation, course title and description must be signed by the student/ parent/ guardian, and approved by the counselor prior to a student enrolling in the private/public instruction off-campus course.
Posting Grades
- After completion of the course, an official transcript from the outside school that includes grade issued and credit earned must be submitted to the high school registrar.
- A student shall receive the same letter grade for the high school credit as is granted by the private/public instruction school. No weighted grade credit will be granted with the exception of College Board Advanced Placement or International Baccalaureate courses that are weighted by the UC. (Note: Students who take AP courses off-campus and who would like to register to take the optional AP exam are not guaranteed a space to take an AP exam at one of the SDUHSD AP exam locations. They may be placed on the SDUHSD exam waitlist.)
- Repeat Course Practices - If a student is repeating a previously taken course, all courses taken and earned grades will remain on the SDUHSD transcript. For SDUHSD GPA calculation, only SDUHSD courses will count as repeats of SDUHSD courses with the exception of standardized courses (e.g. Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate, Project Lead the Way) with the exact same course title and standard curricular content (AR 5121).
- Once off-campus credits are placed on a transcript as an official record, they may not be removed.
