Bike Safety
Student safety is a top priority. To protect riders, pedestrians, and drivers, all students riding a traditional bicycle or eBike to school must obtain a district-issued Bicycle Tag. Students who do not have a Bike Tag visibly affixed to their bicycle will not be permitted to bring it onto any SDUHSD campus.
Bike Tag Process

Step 1: Complete an Approved Safety Course
- All middle school students must complete an approved safety training. For the 2026-2027 school year, students at Carmel Valley, Earl Warren, Diegueño, Pacific Trails, and Oak Crest Middle Schools will automatically fulfill this by attending in-person training during their PE class within the first month of school. A grace period will be provided for all riders until August 28, 2026, to allow students to receive training and complete the online tag application.
- Students who enroll in our district after the start of the school year or students who miss the PE class must complete one of the approved courses:
- CHP Online Course
- In-person training will be scheduled quarterly at an SDUHSD campus outside of school hours.
- Students who wish to obtain a bike tag over the summer may complete the approved online course. Tags will be available in early August, and participants who complete the application will receive an email when the tags are ready for pickup.
Step 2: Complete the Online Tag Application
- Parents must complete the SDUHSD Bicycle Tag Online Form.
- After students complete the approved online course and parents complete the online tag form, students are eligible to receive a bike tag.
Step 3: Pick Up Tag and Place on Bike
- Once the form is submitted and safety training completion is verified, the school Administration Office will issue a district Bicycle Tag. This tag must be visibly affixed to the student’s bicycle frame at all times while on campus.
- Students who do not have a Bike Tag visibly affixed to their Bicycle will not be permitted to bring their bicycle on any SDUHSD campus.
Loss/Replacement of a Bike Tag
- If a Bike Tag is ever lost or stolen, please report this information to the school's Front Office immediately, and a replacement tag will be issued.
- If a new ebike/bicycle is purchased after receiving an initial Bike Tag, please inform the Front Office immediately so we can issue you a new Bike Tag.

safety expectations
Bicycle Tags are a privilege, not a right, and may be revoked at any time by school administration for failure to follow the safety expectations covered in approved safety courses and presentations.
Riding Rules/Laws
Helmets Required: Riders must wear a safety helmet with the safety strap buckled securely beneath the chin.
Walk on School Grounds: Bicycles must be walked when on school grounds. Students must dismount their bikes as they enter the parking lot and walk their bikes on the sidewalk.
Passenger Limits: Passengers are only permitted to ride bikes with a factory-installed passenger seat and must wear a properly secured bike helmet.
Obey Traffic Laws: Under the law, a bicycle is regarded as a vehicle and as such, the rider must obey all of the traffic laws that apply to any vehicle (e.g., riding on the right-hand side of the road, using hand signals, walking the bike in crosswalks, etc.).
Legal E-Bikes and Age: Only Class 1 & Class 2 E-Bikes will be permitted on our campuses. Under the law, riders must be 16 years old or older to ride a Class 3 bike.
Bike Storage and Security
Storage and Access: Bicycles must be parked in designated bike racks, must have a school-issued Bike Tag, and should be locked. Bicycles should never block ingress or egress or be placed in any location that would compromise safety and access.
No Campus Charging: Students using eBikes must charge their equipment before arriving on campus. District outlets should not be used for charging.
Loss and Theft: It is the student's responsibility to lock and secure their bicycle. The school assumes no responsibility for the bicycle, its accessories, or theft on campus or en route to and from school and school-sponsored events.
