San Dieguito Union High School District is dedicated to providing a world-class education that prepares students for a rapidly evolving world. We believe Artificial Intelligence (AI) can support this goal when used responsibly and ethically.

Our approach to AI is guided by a commitment to data privacy, security, and equitable access. We have updated our Board Policies on technology use for both students (BP 6163.4 / E 6163.4)  and staff (BP 4040) to provide clear guidance on the appropriate use of AI tools. These policies, along with our Academic Honesty Policy (BP 5131.9), emphasize the importance of academic integrity, protecting personal information, and maintaining human judgment as central to all educational practices. We are also committed to supporting and developing AI literacy with our students to ensure they are prepared for the future.

The district provides ongoing professional development for staff to equip them to use AI effectively and safely in their classrooms, focusing on how AI can support student learning through personalized instruction, differentiated content, and timely feedback.

Federal and State Guidance

Our district's AI initiatives are fully aligned with federal and state guidance, including the recent U.S. Executive Order, 'Advancing Artificial Intelligence Education for American Youth.' We adhere to federal laws like the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA), and the Children’s Internet Protection Act (CIPA), ensuring the protection of student records and online safety. At the state level, we are guided by California laws, including the Student Online Personal Information Protection Act (SOPIPA), which prohibits the use of student data for targeted advertising. We also secure California National Data Privacy Agreements (CA NDPA) with all web-based tools, legally guaranteeing the protection and limited use of student data, and requiring strong security measures. We regularly update our procedures to maintain compliance with all relevant laws and policies.
