Communications

The Communications Department's goal is to increase awareness, visibility, and support for San Dieguito Union High School District schools and programs. We communicate the mission, vision, values, and goals of SDUHSD and engage the community in supporting student achievement.

Our office plays a central role in engaging all stakeholders in two-way communication. The Communications Department works with the Superintendent, SDUHSD staff, the Board of Trustees, and our partners to actively engage students, parents, teachers, and members of the community.

Our office is responsible for the majority of the district's internal and external communications, is the liaison between the school district and the news media, and connects with our community to build a thriving, supportive learning environment for our children so they can reach their full potential and lead fulfilling lives. We oversee communication for our school district of nearly 12,000 students and 1,000 staff through strategic communication planning, community relations, marketing, branding, and advising our district leadership. Schools and departments are supported through consulting on a variety of issues, including marketing, outreach, and crisis communication response. The office is responsible for San Dieguito Union High School District districtwide internal and external publications, videography, community relations, media relations, district and school websites, website accessibility compliance, and social media, to name a few.

Public Records Act

The Public Records Act is designed to give the public access to information in possession of public agencies.

All records requests must be submitted via email to pra@sduhsd.net or mailed to the District office, to the attention of the Executive Assistant to the Superintendent.

The PRA requires public agencies to initially respond to a request for records within ten calendar days. However, if the records are numerous or other factors make reviewing and collating the relevant documents or records difficult, SDUHSD may inform the requestor of the status of the request within ten days, and further inform the requestor of an estimated timeframe for completion.

ParentSquare Communications

To keep families updated on everything happening at their student's school and across the district, the primary communication platform is ParentSquare.

Receiving District and School Messages
Creating an account is not required to receive messages. As long as an email and phone number are up-to-date in the school’s system, notifications will be sent automatically. However, activating an account allows users to customize how and when they receive these updates. Users can go to the ParentSquare sign-in page or download and open the app, enter an email or phone number, and click “Get Started.” If the information matches, a new activation link will be provided. If not, users should tap “Request Access” or contact the school.

Understanding the Types of Messages
ParentSquare uses three specific types of messages. Here is how they work:
  • Posts (Everyday News): Used for regular school updates, newsletters, and everyday information. Users have complete control over how and when these are received.
  • Smart Alerts (Time-Sensitive): Used for quick reminders and same-day updates. These are usually sent as text messages and will override normal "Post" settings, though this can be adjusted in the account.
  • For true emergencies and urgent safety information, those messages will always bypass all settings to ensure immediate notification, regardless of preferences for the two types above.
Customizing Notifications
To avoid getting overwhelmed by regular district and school updates throughout the day, users can choose the "Digest" setting in their account. Instead of sending a notification every time a regular "Post" is sent, the Digest setting bundles all everyday information into one convenient daily summary delivered after 6:00 PM.
