"Education is the Foundation of Prevention"

We Accept The Challenge

The San Dieguito Union High School District has refined its services to better meet the complex needs of today's students and their families dealing with substance use and abuse issues. The ultimate result is the creation of the READI Program. The acronym READI stands for Recovery Education and Alcohol/Drug Instruction.

This two-day program is designed to provide drug and alcohol education for students and their families.

A special support counselor, with a background in chemical dependency treatment, coordinates the READI substance abuse program. This new program provides a unified effort to address substance use among our student population.

The program operates from a multidisciplinary model, where all educational staff are directly involved in all areas of student support.

The READI Program encourages adolescents to become partners in change.

Entry into the READI Program begins when any of the following circumstances occur:

  • In possession of alcohol and /or drugs
  • In possession of drug paraphernalia
  • Under the influence of alcohol or drugs

Students/Parents may request voluntary participation.

If a student meets one of the above circumstances, the student is then referred to an assistant principal. The student then has a choice of whether to accept a five-day suspension as per the Education Code, or make a positive choice in enrolling in the two day READI Program. Accepting the suspension may place the student in a difficult position when it comes time to apply for entrance into college. If the student chooses our READI Program, the assistant principal will make a notation of confirmation and enroll the student into the two-day program. Completion of the two day READI Program and completion of the Wrap-Around requirements will allow the formal suspension to be removed from the student's permanent record.

The READI Program is very flexible in its design and allows students to enter the program two days throughout the week (Wednesday-Thursday), with Tuesdays reserved for Mandatory Parent Support Group. The students will be in instruction from 8:00am to 3:00pm, with a half hour for lunch on the Earl Warren Middle School campus. Students are not allowed to leave the campus for any reason.

The student will attend the two (2) days of instruction on the Earl Warren Middle School campus located at 155 Stevens Ave., Solana Beach, CA  92075.  Phone number (858) 755-1558 ext. 6183.

The READI Program will help the student avoid punitive measures at school. The student may still be subject to legal actions as delineated in our state Penal Code.

Parent Life Ring Support Group

Parent support groups will be held on Tuesdays and are designed to offer parents support and assistance in dealing with their child's drug and alcohol use. The support groups will be held at the Earl Warren Middle School campus located at 155 Stevens Ave., Solana Beach, CA  92075. There will be one morning group held to accommodate working families 8:00am-9:30am. In essence, we wrap a support system around the youth and family with the goal of restoring unity and giving them the resources to move forward in life.

If a student selects and completes the READI Program, he/she will avoid any written statements about suspensions on the student record; however, students are still subject to suspension from extracurricular activities such as athletics, speech and debate, band, drama, etc. Students will be subject to the rules and regulations that govern participation in these activities.
