Online Health Curriculum
All students in the San Dieguito Union High School District must complete the Health curriculum to earn a diploma. The standard way to meet this requirement is for 9th-grade students to complete Year One PE, which includes the Health curriculum in the course.
The district offers an independent study online health course for eligible students. The online health course does not require students to attend a class - they can complete the course from anywhere that they can access the online curriculum. The course fulfills the state competency and does not earn credits or a grade on the transcript. The eligibility criteria is:
- Students who are exempt from enrollment in Year 1 PE due to medical reasons (physician’s note required)
- Students who are enrolled in Access PE instead of Year 1 PE per an IEP
- 12th graders newly enrolled to the district who have fulfilled the PE requirement and need to fulfill the CA Health competency for graduation requirements
- Incoming 9th-grade students enrolled in a Team Sports PE class without the health curriculum at La Costa Canyon or Torrey Pines High School in 9th grade instead of Year 1 PE
- Incoming 9th grade students who have applied/been approved for Independent Study PE (ISPE) - Any student who is approved for ISPE for 9th grade must enroll in and complete the Health curriculum in the summer prior to the start of 9th grade. Students who fail to complete the Health course will be placed in Year One PE for 9th grade.
