Fall 2020 Student Social-Emotional Supports
In preparation for the start of the school year and potential effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, teachers, counselors, student support specialists, school psychologists and administrators from the school and district level participated in a subcommittee to review data and identify needs related to student social-emotional needs during school reentry in fall. The committee members reviewed information from students, staff and parents provided via the Learning From Home Survey, LCAP Community Survey, Thought Exchange, and spring Student Summits. The team also looked at data related to grades, attendance, student engagement and referrals, and guiding documents from the San Diego County Office of Education and ASCA/NASP. These materials were used as a foundation to review our existing social-emotional multi-tiered systems of support to determine what adjustments were needed due to the impact of school closure and the distance learning model. Tier 1 Universal supports for all students, in all settings were emphasized followed by layered supports in Tier 2 and 3 for vulnerable student groups and those who need further targeted or intensive intervention.
The committee focused on the outcomes of
- creating safe, welcoming, supportive schools and classrooms
- mindfully shifting students back into the school routine
- building resilience and healthy coping strategies and the ability to process complex emotions
- providing students and families with information about supports and resources, including how to seek help if needed
