Sunset Activities -
Sunset students are involved in a number of service learning commitments through standing programs like SHO, the Encinitas Art Tiling Project, beach clean-ups and food drives, as well as activities in Government and social studies courses. Service helps students feel connected and a part of their environment and community.  Service learning requires students to apply their academic and artistic skills to bear on challenges and provides opportunity for reflection and personal development.

Sunset Helping Others (SHO)

The SHO  program has been an integral part of Sunset High School for 15 years. All tutors are screened, interviewed, and selected to be in this program. SHO tutors work with middles school students and elementary school students as mentors. This pas year SHO was filled with academic help, learning group skills, and even basketball games at the new community center. SHO has worked at many of the middle schools in the San Dieguito District. Our tutors cannot work out of the district boundaries due to district policies.

SHO tutors are trained in the following skills:

Academic tutoring
Communication skills
Interpersonal skills
Mentoring
Group process skills
Self esteem
Tobacco education
Drug and alcohol education
Interactive Games

If you want to schedule and/or contact SHO please call Terry Hendlin at 760 753-3860 ext. 5604

Support Groups

Considered by most here to be the heart and soul of Sunset, more than 90% of Sunset students participate in group. Students learn to listen and relate with one another while talking about their experiences. Topics include developing trust and issues of tolerance and equality. There are specialized groups like sobriety group, women’s group, anger management group, and the Latino men’s group, as well as general groups. Participating in group helps many Sunset students gain perspective about their understanding and serves to help all students feel like they belong to the Sunset community. Our program is a leader in the district and in the country and has received favorable reviews by newspapers, and state and county educational representatives. Sunset High School's Support Group Program has earned Model School recognition by CCEA (California Continuation Education Association).

Work Experience

Job Corp Field Trip 10/23/07

Our work experience coordinator is Jackie Fletcher. Students involved in work experience work at least 10 hours a week, and complete weekly assignments that include topics such as the importance of training and education, interviewing skills, job safety, attitudes and qualities employers seek, and budgeting. Students earn five elective credits for every 180 work hours, and can earn 10 credits each semester. They gain workplace confidence and skills while applying their education in a variety of jobs. This valuable program especially helps those students who support themselves while attending Sunset.

Service Learning

Service-learning is an approach to teaching that enables students to learn beyond the classroom and grow through active participation in thoughtfully organized activities and experiences that

*meet actual community needs, including the needs of the school.
*are integrated/infused into the total curriculum.
*are not isolated service activities; but rather, provide structured time for a person to reflect upon the actual service activity.
*develop  lifelong commitment to service for the community and the ability to work effectively as a team member.
*develop academic/leadership skills and possible employment opportunities
