What is our Peer Tutoring Program
As part of SDA’s commitment to help all students succeed, we offer a Peer Tutoring program. Outstanding junior and senior students work directly in selected classrooms, mainly with ninth and tenth grade students. Tutors receive training and ongoing supervision. In classrooms, tutors facilitate small groups, tutor one-on-one, respond to students' work by providing helpful comments, act as role models about the value of learning and thinking, and encourage younger students to take intellectual risks. Tutors are available to all students but focus especially on students who have been identified as needing extra academic support. Besides helping other students, the tutors themselves benefit in many ways, including: growing as learners by understanding how people learn, improving their interpersonal communication skills, increasing their self-reliance, and strengthening their problem-solving skills. If you are interested in becoming a Peer Tutor see Mrs. Straitiff or make an appointment with your counselor.
