Summer School

San Dieguito Union High School District

The Board of Trustees of the San Dieguito Union High School District has authorized a summer school program which includes Remediation, Intervention, English Language Learning, and Enrichment, Acceleration, Summer Bridge and Retention Prevention classes.

First Session: June 22nd - July 10th

Second Session: July 13th - July 30th

Courses are selected to meet student needs both in the remediation and acceleration areas. Students who have failed or received less than satisfactory grades may make up some of their courses and receive passing or improved grades for their efforts. Acceleration classes are specifically designed for those students who are looking for flexibility in their yearly study programs. The biggest emphasis during summer school continues to be in both mathematics and English language skill acquisition.

Any students being considered for middle school retention must attend a summer school remediation program. Students who have scored at Basic or Below Basic should consider a summer bridge program to help them with English and Mathematics skill development and application. Our bridge programs are usually offered to incoming and/or new 7th or 9th graders.

There are no costs for attending summer school within the San Dieguito Union High School District. The state of California will reimburse the school district based on the hours students attend throughout the summer school program. Student attendance is a crucial element in meeting our fiscal responsibilities for all supplemental hourly programs (summer school makes up 98% of our supplemental hourly programs). Our summer attendance policies were developed to ensure a sound instructional program for our student learning along with an appropriate financial remuneration for these efforts.

Applications for all of our summer school programs are generally available both at the school site and on our web site. We begin accepting applications for accelerated high school course work beginning in March. Once the deadline passes for accelerated class applications, we hold a lottery to select those students who will be eligible for taking said courses. The state of California limits the number of accelerated and enrichment classes we can offer at 5% of the total district school population. These are generally popular offerings and we often have many more applicants then there are classes available. Some of the accelerated classes offered in the past few years have included Health Education, World History and Physical Education. At the same time, our middle school enrichment programs have included classes in Music, Drama, Art and Physical Education.

For students who need continuous assistance with their English Language acquisition skills, our middle and high school ELD classes are small and provide excellent instruction in both mathematics and English.

When considering whether summer school is an option for any student, our advice is to seek out your school counselor and discuss with them the alternatives available and select the options that best suit your personal educational needs. We welcome all students to the San Dieguito Union High School District summer school programs and hope your experience with our talented staff brings you closer to accomplishing your educational desires.
