What is AVID?
-
AVID is an
acronym that
stands for
Advancement Via
Individual
Determination.
-
AVID is an
in-school
academic support
program for
grades 5-12 that
prepares
students for
college
eligibility and
success.
-
AVID "levels the
playing field"
for minority,
rural,
low-income and
other students
without a
college-going
tradition in
their families.
-
AVID is for all
students, but it
targets those in
the academic
middle.
-
Three-fourths of
all AVID
graduates attend
college, almost
twice the rate
at which U.S.
high school
graduates do.
What does AVID look
like in the San
Dieguito Union High
School District?
-
Currently, seven
of the eight
comprehensive
middle and high
school sites
within SDUHSD
offer an AVID
program.
-
There are twenty
sections of
AVID, taught by
thirteen
teachers, across
the district, an
increase of one
section from the
2003-04 school
year.
-
469 students are
currently
enrolled in the
AVID program, an
increase of 35
students from
the 2003-04
school year.
-
All sites are
committed to
providing the
program for
students, even
though there is
no funding
source for AVID
allotted by the
state.
