Diegueño Middle School Information
All visitors to campus are to report to the main office to pick up a
VISITORS BADGE. Badges are also available for PARENT VOLUNTEERS. We appreciate your
support in helping keep our campus safe.
P.T.S.A.
We are fortunate to have a very active P.T.S.A. on campus. You
can support the P.T.S.A. by becoming a member, supporting P.T.S.A. fundraisers, and
becoming a parent volunteer. Parent volunteer services are an integral program on our
campus. We would like to invite anyone who has a little time available to join the ranks
of our parent volunteers. Fill out the parent volunteer sheet or call the school office.
TEACHER MESSAGES
If you are concerned about policy, a grade, or an assignment in
a specific class, please call that teacher directly. Simply call
the
teachers voice mail and leave your number and the time during the day you can be
reached. The teacher will return your call at his/her earliest convenience.
You may also send an e-mail directly to a teacher. E-mail addresses are as
follows;
First name of teacher, followed by a period, followed by the last name of the
teacher, followed by @sduhsd.net.
Example:
firstname.lastname@sduhsd.net
Phone: 760-944-1892
TRANSPORTATION

Bus service is still available to
middle schoolstudents. Bus routes, fees,
and schedules will be published in the local newspaper a week before school starts. Copies
of the new schedule will also be available at each school site in the district. Some
students may want to use public buses for transportation. Call North County Transit at
722-6283 for information about public bus schedules and routes. You must have the exact
fare when you ride a public bus.
STUDENT INSURANCE
The District does not carry medical or dental insurance for students
injured on school premises. Optional low cost insurance coverage is offered through
Myers-Stevens Company. Additional enrollment forms are available at the school if desired.
Students participating in athletics must be covered by medical insurance by the parents.
ASSOCIATED STUDENT BODY

Student activities are planned by the leadership class. ASB sponsors school
dances, lunchtime activities, dress-up days and other special events. ASB cards and
yearbooks will be sold in September as one package. Students can reserve a
yearbook and receive a student body card which will enable him/her to receive discounts. Help
support student activities by purchasing an ASB card!!
ATTENDANCE PROCEDURES
Please call our office - 944-1892, ext. 6605 - whenever your child
is not going to be at school. A quick telephone call from you is the most efficient and
accurate way to monitor student attendance. All you need to do is call and give your
child's name and the reason for absence. If you forget to call, you must send a note when
your child returns to school. The following absences or tardies are designated as excused
according to State attendance laws, however, districts do not
receive attendance monies although the absences are excused:
personal illness
serious illness or death in the immediate family
medical or dental attention for student
authorized religious holiday
The following are NOT excusable absences or tardies according to State
attendance laws: (1) missing school bus, (2) trips, vacation, (3) shopping, (4) birthday
or other celebrations, (5) car trouble.
Each time a student enters class late, instruction is interrupted for the whole class. A
first period tardy may result in detention. REMEMBER: A student's absence must be
cleared by (1) parent telephone verification, or (2) written excuse by parent or guardian.
Consistent student attendance is mandatory for student success.
PARENT CALLS & MESSAGES
We request your cooperation in limiting classroom interruptions. Lunches,
supplies, forgotten books and assignments, or telephone messages cannot be delivered to
students in class. Every time a classroom door is opened, concentration and
instruction are interrupted. One delivered telephone message or forgotten lunch can
distract an entire class. Remind your child to check the MESSAGE BOARD in the
attendance office whenever he/she forgets an item. Our teachers thank you for your
understanding.
OFF-GROUNDS PASSES
Students who leave school for doctor's appointments, etc., must report to
the attendance office for an off-grounds pass. Parents should contact the office by phone
or note before school on the day of the appointment or the day prior to the appointment.
HOMEWORK
While teacher and course demands vary, it will not be uncommon for students
to have two hours of homework on an average school night. Occasionally, students will need
to budget extra time appropriately for major projects and papers. Please check daily to
see that your child is maintaining his/her homework log. Homework logs are included in the
Agenda Book which is given to each student.
MISSED ASSIGNMENTS
Students are expected to make up work missed due to excused absences.
Homework may be requested on the third day of absence. Please make this request
before 9:30 a.m. so that it can be ready by 3:00 p.m. For one or two day absences, your
child should contact an in-class "study buddy" for missed assignments. Please
help your child remember to obtain and file telephone numbers of at least two friends in
each class.
COUNSELORS

The Diegueño counselors welcome the opportunity to help. A student who
wants to see a counselor can stop by the counseling office before school, during lunch, or
after school. If the counselor is not available, the student can fill out a "Request
to See Counselor" slip. The counselor will call the student from class for the
appointment. Please feel free to contact the counselors for any additional information at
944-1892, ext.6604.
GRADES

Most report cards are carried home at the end of each 6 weeks except for
the final report card of the year and deficiency notices which will be mailed. The
computer-printed semester grades are recorded on the student's permanent record.
Student progress reports may be sent by a teacher anytime between marking periods. Check
the calendar in your newsletter to see when academic deficiency notices will be mailed out
and when walk-around progress reports are available for students to pick up in the
Counseling Office.
